Ganga Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of the bright half  in the month of Jyaistha (Dashami Tithi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha) every year and dedicated to the Goddess Ganga. Currently Ganga Dussehra would be celebrated on Tuesday, June 14, 2016. This is the day on which the sacred river Ganga first time descended on earth from heaven. Ganga Dussehra is also known as Gangavataran which means ‘the descent of the Ganga’. The festival Ganga Dussehra hold a special importance for Hindus.

Ganga is considered as the most holy and divine river in not only India but also amongst the most sacred rivers across the world. This truth is universal and is believed by all Indians and also by famous scholars of the world River. The river Ganga is worshipped, with a belief that Goddess Ganga can wash away all sins of mankind. It is believed that praying on this day can help you attain salvation from 10 sins. Ganga Dussehra is celebrated at major ghats of India such as Varanasi, Allahabad, Garh-Mukteshwar, Prayag, Haridwar and Rishikesh. Amidst hundreds and thousands of pilgrims, the priests perform aartis to goddess Ganga. All one can hear is the pilgrims and pundits praising and singing goddess Ganga.

On the day Ganga Dussehra devotees worship Goddess Ganga and take bath in Ganges. Taking bath in Ganges and offering charity or Dan-Punya on Ganga Dussehra day is considered highly auspicious. It is believed by Indians that holy dip in Ganges on the day Ganga Dussehra  can purge all type of sins.
